Where it begins
Our journey begins in 2022 as we evaluate our landscape. Shorewalk Palms was build and landscaped in the 1980's when there was little concern for the hot buttons of today. Plants were incorporated into the landscape for color. Large expanses of lawn were created with turf grass. That was the expectation and practice of the time.
Jump ahead to the current times and we're now concerned with runoff, algae blooms, invasive plants, water pollution and carbon footprints. Our challenge was deciding how and where to begin to transform our landscape within our limited budget and workforce of volunteers.
We were fortunate to discover some grant opportunities in our area and then scoured our landscape to find areas where we might apply grant money to solve problems. Here are some photos of problem areas:

Areas along sections of the property perimeter had large voids where plants had died due to malfunctioning sprinklers or bad planting practices
These areas were identified as candidates for native plantings of seagrape. It was chosen for it's fast growth, drought tolerance and dense foliage.
These problem areas were the target of our first grant challenge.
